Myth or reality about „bad” ozone and „good” ozone!

From an ecological standpoint, ozone has been divided into two categories: "good ozone" and "bad ozone".

Ozone therapy VERONIKI LifeThe ground-level ozone in the tropospheree is considered "bad", being a component of urban smog that contributes to pollution. This kind of ozone is formed as a result of the reaction between nitrogen oxides and various volatile chemicals in the atmosphere, under the action of sunlight. In large amounts it is toxic and can be detrimental to vegetation and humans, especially those suffering from asthma and allergies due to the irritating effect on the respiratory mucous membrane. Extended and repeated exposure can cause inflammation of the respiratory epithelium and even irreversible alterations at this level. The toxic effect is due to the instability of the ozone molecule, which easily releases one oxygen atom, thus becoming highly oxidizing.

The ozone in the highest layers of the atmosphere, or the stratospheric ozone, found at heights of over 10,000 m, is the "good" ozone. Its role here is to protect the Earth and the people from ultraviolet radiation. The release of different chemicals into the atmosphere depletes this ozone layer, bringing about a decrease in its filtration capacity and an increase in the levels of harmful ultraviolet radiation, leading to the risk of increased incidence of skin cancer or cataract.

Considering these properties, which is, therefore, the usefulness of ozone in the therapeutic practice?

From the scientific viewpoint, it has been proven that what is toxic in high doses can have a therapeutic effect if used in small doses.

Furthermore, there are standard therapy protocols, set by international ozone therapy organisations, which are followed by all practices where this system is made use of. The material being administered is always a mixture of ozone and oxygen at permitted ozone concentrations between 1 and 100 µg/ml, supplied by the ozone generating machines equipped with computer control systems. Ozone is produced from medical oxygen, stored in standard oxygen cylinders. The concentration and the amount, as well as the route of administration, are selected according to the international protocols.

The use of ozone for health benefits has experienced an upward trend in the last 100 years. Countries with a tradition in this area, where serious research has been conducted, are: Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Spain and the United States of America.

In recent years, ozone therapy has developed in Romania, too. Although the number of practices that provide ozone therapy is still rising, it appears that neither the Romanian physicians, nor the patients are sufficiently familiar with the benefits of this treatment.
