PHYSIOLOGICAL AND ANATOMIC FACTS
The treatment method known worldwide as colon therapy is suitable for colon, the last part of digestive tract which is responsible for the formation of human feces and their elimination. The average lenght of the colon is about 1,6 m having a diameter of 7 cm in the initial portion that decreases to 4 cm at its ending.
The large intestine is located on the lower abdominopelvic cavity and in its form describes the so-called "colic area"
This area has:
- an ascending section (ascending colon)
- a transversal section (transverse colon)
- a descending section (descending colon)
The area is linking the initial segment of the large intestine (known as “cecum”) with the final segment (known as “rectum”).
The large intestine wall consists of four layers that follow from the inside to the outside as follows:
Which perform 3 main functions:
The secretory function of the large intestine is limited to mucus secretion in the process of progression and elimination of feces. Small amounts of food that have remained unabsorbed in the small intestine are subject to fermentation and rotting processes under the action of enzymes secreted by bacteria in the intestinal lumen. The fermentation processes represented by the degradation of hydrocarbon residues are followed by the appearance of organic acids (acetic, lactic, butyric) and gases (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen).
They are produced near cecum, ascending colon and the ascending colon and the right half of the transverse under the action of the microbial anaerobic flora and are accompanied by the biosynthesis of water-soluble vitamins from group B as well as vitamin K.
Putrefaction processes are the degradation of protein residues that reach the colon and have toxic action. Some of them resorbs in the blood and are deactivated by the liver, then eliminated through the urine. Besides these products, gases like hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans give the "characteristic" smell of the feces.
The function of absorbing at the level of large intestine consists in the absorption of water, electrolytes, vitamins (group B and K) and amino acids.
The motor function contains movements as:
• peristaltic
• segmentation
• tonic contractions
The peristaltic mass contractions allows the feces to enter into rectum and to trigger defecation.
